A Clinical Analysis of Breast Cancer



Abstract
A clinical analysis of one hundred and three primary breast cancers, treated by surgical resection from July 1968 to March 1991, was performed at the department of General surgery of Chung Ang University. The purpose of this study is to analysis
the
clinical parameter or breast cancers.
@ES The results were as follows;
@EN 1) The most frequent age incidence was noted in fifth decade and the mean age was 48.5 years old.
2) The most common complaints was palpable mass(94.2%) and the pain was accomained in 13.6%, and the palpable axillary lymph node(LN) was 37.6% at the first visit to the hospital.
3) Most patients visited to hospital within 1 year from onset(83.4%).
4) The primary tumor was located on the right breast in 53 cases(51.4%), on the left breast in 49 cases(47.6%), and on both side in 1 cases(1.0%). The most frequent site of tumor was upper outer quadrant in 50 cases(48.5%).
5) Tumor diameter was 2~5 cm in more than half of the cases(62.4%) and 22.8% of cases showed more than 5 cm in diameter.
6) Axillary LN metastasis occurred in the tumor with more than 5 cm more frequently than in the tumor with less than 5 cm.
7) The association between overweight and breast cancer was significant statistically(P<0.05).
8) The operation type was follows;
Standard radical mastectomy was performed in 61 cases(59.2%), modified radical mastectomy in 30 cases(29.1%), simple mastectomy with axillary LN dissection in 9 cases, lumpectomy only in 2 cases, modified radical mastectomy with opposite side
simple
mastectomy in 1 case.
9) The most common stage of breast cancer was stage II(61 cases, 59.2%) by TNM classification.
10) The most common pathologic type was infiltrating ductal cancer(94 cases, 91.3%), and others were infiltrating lobular cancer(5 cases, 4.8%), Paget's disease(3 cases, 2.9%), liposarcoma (1 cases, 1.0%).
11) Metastatsis to the axillary LN was noted on pathological finding in 59 cases(58.4%).
